How to convert HEIC to JPG
Drag your HEIC photos onto the upload area above, or click Choose File and pick them from your device. You can select several photos at once. Click Convert to JPG and each photo gets its own Download button; when you convert more than one, a single ZIP download appears as well. Your original HEIC files are not changed — you get new JPG copies.
Conversion runs in your browser. The converter is loaded the first time you select a file (a few megabytes, so it can take a moment on a slow connection) and your photos are not sent to a server. Very large photos take longer and need more memory, so on an older phone it helps to convert them in smaller batches.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the file extension Apple uses for photos saved in the HEIF format (High Efficiency Image Format) with HEVC compression. iPhones and iPads have saved photos this way by default since iOS 11, unless the camera is set to Most Compatible. At similar visual quality the file is noticeably smaller than a JPG, and the format can hold things JPG cannot, such as 10-bit color and depth information.
The catch is compatibility. Plenty of websites, apps, printers and older computers still cannot open HEIC, which is why so many people end up needing to change HEIC to JPG just to upload a photo or send it to someone else.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
JPG is the image format everything understands. The usual reasons to convert are a website or application form that only accepts JPG or PNG, sending photos to someone on Windows, Android or an older device, a photo editor or print shop that does not read HEIC, and putting pictures into documents or slides. If you plan to keep editing or archiving at full quality, keep the original HEIC files too.
Quality, file size and what changes
JPG is a lossy format, so converting HEIC to JPG re-compresses the photo. FreeConverte saves JPGs at a high quality setting (95 out of 100), which keeps the difference hard to see at normal viewing sizes, and the photo keeps its original width and height. It will not be bit-for-bit identical to the HEIC, and no JPG converter can make it so. If you need a lossless result, HEIC to PNG avoids the extra compression step.
Expect the JPG to be larger than the HEIC you started with, because HEIC compresses more efficiently. A few things from the original do not carry over. JPG is 8-bit, so extra color depth is flattened; a Live Photo becomes a single still image; and the converted file does not include the original's metadata, such as the capture date and location.
Works on any device
The converter runs in the browser, so the same page works on Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, Android phones, iPhones and iPads — without installing an app or a HEIF codec pack in Windows.
What to do with your JPG files next
Once your photos are JPG, you can combine several into one document with Image to PDF, shrink them for a website with JPG to WebP, or switch to a lossless format with JPG to PNG. Going the other way, PNG to JPG and WebP to JPG turn other formats into standard JPG files.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG?
Use the converter at the top of this page: add your HEIC files, click Convert to JPG, and download the results. It runs online in your browser, so there is nothing to install and no account to create. Your phone or computer can also do it without a website — the iPhone, Windows and Mac answers below show how.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone?
To stop getting HEIC photos from now on, open Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible; new photos will be saved as JPG. That setting does not change photos you have already taken. For those, open this page in Safari, pick the photos and convert them. If you move photos to a computer, Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Automatic converts them to a compatible format during the transfer.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?
Windows can open HEIC once the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store are installed (they are free). Some PCs also need the HEVC Video Extensions, which can carry a small fee depending on your device. After that, open the photo in Paint and use File > Save as > JPEG picture. If you would rather not install anything, the converter on this page works in any browser on Windows 10 and 11.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Mac?
Preview opens HEIC photos directly: open the file, choose File > Export, pick JPEG as the format and save. In Finder you can also select one or more photos, right-click, and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image, then JPEG (macOS Monterey and later).
Will I lose quality when converting HEIC to JPG?
JPG is a lossy format, so there is a small re-compression step. FreeConverte saves JPGs at a high quality setting (95 out of 100) and keeps the original pixel dimensions, so most people cannot see a difference at normal viewing size. If you want to avoid any additional compression, convert to PNG instead — the files will be much larger, though.
Is HEIC better than JPG?
Technically, mostly yes: at similar visual quality a HEIC file is usually much smaller than a JPG (about half is a commonly cited figure), and it can store more color depth. JPG's advantage is compatibility, since almost every device, website and app can open it. HEIC is better for saving space on your phone; JPG is better for sharing, uploading and editing.
Why are my photos saved as HEIC instead of JPG?
iPhones and iPads have saved photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11, because it keeps storage use down. Some Android phones and cameras can save HEIC/HEIF too. On an iPhone you can switch to JPG under Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.
How do I open a HEIC photo?
iPhones, iPads and Macs open HEIC natively. Android 9 and newer can generally open it as well, and Windows needs the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. The simplest way to make a HEIC photo viewable everywhere is to convert it to JPG with the tool on this page.
